In-school excellence programmes: League/Union/Hockey/Basketball/Gym

Through the MacKillop Saints Sporting Association, MacKillop Catholic College offers a range of extracurricular sporting and fitness options for students to take part in. Sport is an excellent way to get involved in the cultural life of MacKillop outside of the classroom, giving you the opportunity to build friendships, stay fit, have fun and have something to look back on and be proud of for the rest of your life. Please indicate which sports academies you wish to be part of in 2021. You can sign up to multiple sports if you wish. Whilst the focus period will have a specific emphasis on that sport, all sports will generally have some activity and opportunities throughout the year. Details on each option can be found below. Rugby codes, Hockey and Basketball all include a free gym programme during their relevant seasons.

Further information can be found on the MacKillop Saints website.

About Each Option

Rugby Codes – Led by Mr Matthew Sharp

Rugby is the figurehead sport of MacKillop Catholic College, and as such, to be part of the Saints Rugby programme is to be considered a privilege. When you take to the field in Saints colours, you become a part of our history. We have a strong focus on camaraderie in the Saints Rugby teams, and it expected that players commit to the sport and support their team mates by being present for all games, training sessions and gym sessions, as well as social and team building occasions such as Awards Nights. Members of the MacKillop Saints’ Rugby club competition team are strongly encouraged to also be part of the academy and vice versa, as the school and club Rugby programmes are made to complement each other, however members of other club teams are still welcome to be part of the Saints Academy and play for MacKillop in school competitions. Non-members are welcome to join in for outside of school hours training, but only members may play in competition games. Membership is open to everyone. With Rugby Union moving back to the wet season at the end of 2020, players now have the opportunity to participate throughout the year playing both codes without schedule conflict. We encourage this. This year, we are offering a 25% discount for those who sign up to both codes. We have an active MacKillop Rugby Alumni network going back to the early days of MacKillop, and your connection with the Club and the College will continue to be recognised and remembered throughout your future careers.

Hockey – Led by Mr Paul Dimmick

Hockey is an exciting sport which develops fitness and teamwork skills. It is a sport that Australia has traditionally done well in, and many opportunities exist for advancement for those who get into it. There is a thriving local club competition, which students can also take part in through our strategic partnership with the Palmerston Saints Hockey Club.

Basketball – Led by Mr Nathaniel Jackson

Basketball is an extremely popular sport in the top end, and at MacKillop we are able to offer top-notch training opportunities with two basketball courts and access to professional coaching. We have a strong partnership with the Ellis Titans, facilitating the option for Saints Basketball Academy students to play in the vibrant local club competition in our own colours under the titans banner.

Gym – Led by Mr Jasen Bryers

Gym sessions are complimentary (in fact compulsory) for students participating in the other team sport academies, however students not involved in the academies are able to sign up to just do gym sessions separately if they wish. Our 2021 Gym Program will feature gym sessions focused on personalised strength and conditioning four afternoons a week. Students younger than Year 10 will require permission from parents, as well as an assessment from our Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Current Schedule

Boys – Monday and Thursday After School
Girls – Tuesday and Thursday After School

Running Club

When running club is happening, students can come in early in the morning to go for a run together before the start of school to build fitness and have fun. Opportunities for travel and public events, including possible participation in the NT City to Surf and the Brisbane Marathon, are on the cards for this year. Running club includes a complimentary breakfast.
